Questions
Things people ask
If yours isn't here, write to us — a person answers.
How does it know what I am looking at?
Your location and which way you are facing. It reads the places around you, picks the one worth talking about, and starts. You can also tap any place in the list to hear about that one instead.
Where do the facts come from?
Wikipedia, and we show you which article. Every claim in a story is traceable to a passage you can read in the app. If we cannot find a source for something, we do not say it.
What happens when it does not know?
It tells you. Ask who lived in a particular building and you will usually get “I do not have a source for that, so I would rather not guess,” followed by what it can tell you. We would rather disappoint you than mislead you.
Does it work without signal?
Yes, once you have downloaded the city. Stories, sources and your pre-asked questions all work offline, and the app shows a banner naming the pack it is playing from so you always know.
Can I change how it talks?
Tone and length, any time, mid-walk. Curious friend, historian or storyteller; thirty seconds, a couple of minutes, or everything it has. It re-tells the story immediately.
Which languages?
The guide speaks and writes in the language you set. On a live tour, the human guide speaks theirs and each participant hears their own — translated as it is said, with captions available.
Is accessibility information included?
If you tell us your access needs, step-free routing and access notes appear on every place, trip and meeting point. If you do not, we do not clutter your screen with it.
How do I get paid as a guide?
Guide Pro lets you host tours. Travellers pay for the tour at the time of booking and the money reaches you directly through Stripe; the subscription and the tour fee are separate charges.
What do you do with my data?
Your journal and tastes are yours and stay on your account. You can download everything or delete the account from Settings. Deleting removes the journal and cancels the subscription, and any tour you have already paid for stays valid with the guide.
Is there a web version?
Yes. Atlin runs in the browser at /go — the same app you would carry on a phone, not a cut-down version of it. A browser is a worse place to walk than a phone, so treat it as the way to try Atlin sitting down. The desktop layout designed for planning a trip is a separate thing, and it is not live; you can see the design.
Why does the web app ask for a password?
Because it is a testing build, not a finished release, and we would rather show it to people we can talk to than to everyone at once. This site is open to anyone; only /go is held back. Ask us and we will send you a password.
How do I cancel?
Settings, then Plan and billing, then Stripe. One or two taps and it stops at the end of the month you have paid for. We do not ask you why.
